The last day I left off was a really wonderful day. Why? Let me just show you a few pictures and maybe you can understand:
So Sabina and Damijana and I drove up to this Castle Prem, which was really wonderful. It started construction in the 1100's and was added upon for centuries. It wasn't considered finished until about the 1700s, I think. By that time, the size of the castle had more than doubled, and there were greater lines of defense, bigger walls, etc.
so that was super rad and beautiful and gave a wonderful view. But the highlight of the day?
We drove down to visit another old castle-- well, a manor. But it was super old, so we wanted to go. It is currently owned by a super cool guy who plays Irish music and his wife who is wry nice and they brew some amazing apple cider but they also have the most adorable animals.
Like after 2 hours with these guys, I would never leave. (Spoiler alert, I had to leave...)
But my goodness
Look at how adorable they are.
I'd write more about Monday, but I don't really remember, because here it is, Thursday, and I am just now writing... Ugh. Sorry.
So on Tuesday, after Sabina and I walked around town a bit more in the morning, Igor and I left for Grosuplje, where the Špehar family lives. While the Pugelj family is my grandfather's family, the Špehar family is my grandmother's family. I think I explained that already but I'm not sure...
On our way there, we stopped by another castle which I, as usual, forget the name of, but it was amazing! It was built into the side of a cave, so it has a main castle and an inside castle. Inside the caves!
Look at how cool that is!
We arrived in Grosuplje around 4:00, when we met with Jože. He's super cool and speaks English very well so that's always nice.
Grosuplje is a smaller town near Ljubljana, the capitol of Slovenia. There are so many trees, even in the capitol! And the sunsets are so amazing!!
I'll talk about yesterday (Wednesday) because I didn't do much, but I'll leave Thursday for another day.
On Wednesday, Stanko Špehar (Jože's father) made me some eggs and pumpkin blossoms, which I though was odd, but I tried it anyway and it was good!
I followed him outside, where he was making wasp traps. Basically, the Špehars grow a LOT of fruit, like grapes, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, pears. You get the idea. And so they have a lot of wasps around-- not bees. Wasps. Bees are good. Wasps are pointless and do nothing productive, so they set these traps for them. The traps are just large 2 litre bottles with a bit of juice in them, and a hole cut in them so the wasps can get in and basically they drown because they can't escape. So that was interesting.
We picked blackberries!! They're so good! And the plant doesn't have thorns! So you don't get cut and jabbed and poked and stabbed by the plants while picking them! (There are, however, a lot of wasps so you don't want to get stung or bitten by those.)
And ugh I missed blackberries. These are so amazing and juicy and wow I love them. I had a whole plate of them covered with brown sugar, courtesy of Stanko, and wow that was wonderful.
A little later, Jože and I went out to meet with his girlfriend so they could look at an apartment. She's super nice and also speaks really good English so that's cool.
We walked around the city (Ljubljana) center for a while, and they talked about good things for me to see in the next days when I walk around by myself. It was super good and now I'm super tired so I'm going to stop now. I'll leave you with a picture of the clouds from earlier today (Thursday) because they were super cool.
Ttyl, guys. I miss home a lot.
